12/18/09

Darren from Clovis N.M. with a couple of brutes he caught at night on 12/17/09 using minnows along with white Leprechaun swim slabs. The small one went 9 pounds and the bigger one over 11 pounds.

Water temp = 44 -45 degrees, main lake clear

Not much fishing pressure, but the fish are still around. Whites continue to be caught using slabs in 30-35 feet of water. Walleye are also being caught in the same type of water.
Cat fishing --- slow
Crappie --- some slabs being caught on minnows in 30-35 feet of water. Its slow, but the fish caught are quality ones.
No report on other species.

I will be White tail deer & Rooster hunting up in Iowa the next few weeks, so you all have a safe and Merry Holidays.
See you next year!!!!!

Dec. 5th, 2009 BURRRRRRR

Taos and cousins with a nice Walleye and a White bass caught 11/28/09.

Taos with his 4.5 pound Walleye caught on a White Leprechaun slab on 11/28/09

Peter Patrone with son Pete Jr. with a nice catch of Walleye and Whites caught 11/24/09.
Dec. 5th, 2009 Water Temp = 47 degrees Main lake lightly stained --- river arms heavily stained.
Fishing pressure very light the last week because of below freezing temps. We are starting to climb out of the deep freeze with high temps projected to be around 50 next week. The only reports I have is for Walleye and the White bass. Fish in 20-40 feet of water with White colored slabs. The Rogers park area has been producing fish more consistently for me than anywhere else. The Mine canyon area along with the big flat north of the golf course is also producing fish. Patients is needed, but if stick at it you will catch some fish.

Nov.13th, 2009

Boat inspections are done and the tourney entrants for the New Mexico High Desert Walleye tournament are waiting for the 6:30 a.m. take off time.

The top three teams at the end off the tourney are (left to right) 3rd place JD Carr & Brett Mills, 2nd place John & Hank McWilliams, and 1st place Jim O'conner & Jeff Cooper.

Lionel and Larry from Colorado with their catch taken on 11-06-09.

Susan Latham from Logan with another stinger of Channel cats taken 11-05-09 on Sonny's sticky bait.

Water temp = 55-56 degrees Main lake lightly stained with the river arms heavily stained.
The High Desert Walleye Tourney was held Nov. 7th & 8th and here are the results:1st place =Jeff Cooper and Jim O'Conner---27.93 pounds
2nd place = John and Hank McWilliams----22.14 pounds
3rd place = JD Carr and Brett Mills ---------21.81 pounds
4th place = Kevin Audrain and Kalin Audrain - 20.35 pounds
5th place = Ed Rodriguez and Donnie Bell -----19.34 pounds
6th place = Mike Alvarado and Brian Stangel ---14.32 pounds
7th place = Donnie & JJ Tollison --------------13.66 pounds
There were 11 teams and the top 5 places paid out. 1st place paid over $1500 green backs. If you are interested next year in participating stop by the Tackle Box for all the info. We would like to see this tourney grow. It is a tournament with 100% pay out along with some large donations from various companies and individuals. It is extremely well ran and very organized. All involved had a great time.
Walleye -- fish slabs and blades in 30-50 feet of water. Very little pressure right now, but the fish are out there.
White bass -- slabs and blades once again, except fish 25-35 feet of water. Limits are not uncommon.
Small and Large mouth bass --- Some Smallies being caught while fishing for the Walleye & Whites, but other than that the fishing pressure is too light to report on them.
Channel Catfish continue to be hammered. Fish near tulle's in 4-8 feet of water using Sonny's sticky stink bait.

Fish are Snapping

Mike Alvarado from Santa Fe with his limit of Walleye and some White bass caught on 10/22/09 slabbing White Leprechaun Swim Slabs.
My wife Maria took this picture of our limit of Walleyes taken 10-23-09. We were fishing 30-50 feet of water using White Leprechaun slabs.
Jerry and Ish from Roswell with their Mule deer taken opening day --10-24-09

Water Temp = 59 degrees
Main lake is lightly stained with the arms heavily stained.
The wind is becoming a little more blustery around here lately. It will dictate how many fish you will catch. When slabbing in 50 feet of water, wind above 15-20 MHP makes this very difficult. If you are planning a trip to catch some fish, you may want to check the weather report referring to the wind.
Walleye --- Slamming White Leprechaun swim slabs in the main channel in 30-55 feet of water. Your presentation must be vertical from the boat for the best results. Minnows are also working at the same depths.
White bass ---Excellent bite early in the morning fishing White slabs in 25-35 feet of water around Horseshoe Bend. Fishing in front of the Dam has also been producing some fish.
Catfish --- Excellent bite for Channel cats on Sonny's Sticky Stink bait. Fish 3-7 feet of water near cattails on the south side of the lake.
Smallies and Bucket mouths ---no reports from me or my clients. I would think they are biting if you were fishing for them.
The High Desert Walleye Tourney is Nov. 7th and 8th. Call me or the directer (James Welch) at 505-314-3256 for further info.
This weekend is when my deer season opens up. My shop will be open sporadically over the next 4-5 days.

Oct.20th, 2009

Truit Taylor and Norris Thomas from Portalis, N.M. with fish caught 10/18/09. We only fished a few hours ---the wind blew us off the water.

John Trenfield and son from Amarillo, Tx. with 10 of the 35 fish caught on 10-17-09. It was an excellent day for fishing and catching.

Water temp = 61 degrees in the morning
65 degrees in the afternoon
Water lightly stained in the main lake with heavier stain in the river arms.
Fishing has been pretty good if the wind is not blowing 30 MPH. Slabbing in 30-50 foot of water is nearly impossible with strong winds. It can be done, but it beats the hell out of you.
The High Desert Walleye Tourney is coming up Nov. 7th & 8th. You can contact myself or you can call James Welch (director) at 505-314-3256 for further information. It is a well ran tourney and growing every year.
White bass is really starting to heat up. White slabs in 25-35 feet of water has been very consistent for me. I carry a huge inventory of the Leprechaun swim slab --- the best slabs that I have fished with. Stop by and I can tell you where the schools of "Whites" are located.
Small mouth and Large mouth bass has been slow. Very little pressure, but I do know of a small tourney this past weekend and 5 pounds was leading it after day one. We have been catching a few smallies while slabbing in 30 feet of water.
Catfish has been excellent. Fish near tulle's in 5-7 feet of water using Sonny's Sticky Bait.
Walleye are hitting slabs, but they are not in the same places that the White bass are. We fished only about an hour for Walleye the other day and managed 3 in the 18-19 inch range. If you are catching whites, you need to move a bit deeper for the Wallys. The Walleye should really start to get cooking in the next couple of weeks.
My guiding service is starting to get busy on the weekends. Call in advance a week or two or try a week day if possible. I love to put fisher people on fish. This is the time of year where numbers of fish can be caught. Check out the link on my webpage for a fishing show that I guided on last fall. It is a good example of what to expect on a trip.

Sept. 29th,2009

A mature cow Elk taken a week ago during a muzzle loading hunt near Crested Butte Co. with my son Luke and brothers Jamie from Wi. and Steve from Ia.(not pictured)
A stringer full of 5 lb Channel cats caught 9/28/09 on Sonny's sticky stink bait by Johnny Latham from Logan and his son Mark from Hereford, Tx. They caught their limit of 30 cats in 6 hours in 5-6 feet of water.

Sept.29th, 2009 Water temp 68 degrees
I have been out of the state on a Elk hunt the last few weeks which has prevented me to up-date the fishing report. I'm back now, but I personally have not fished the lake in over three weeks. Except for what I'm calling an exceptional cat fish bite going on right now (I saw the fish), the rest of the report will be fictitious.
Walleye --- 7-9 pounders being caught on about anything anywhere. I have not heard of any smaller fish being caught.
Bass ---Large & Small mouth are pounding white crank baits in 30 feet of water which is very uncommon. Again, large fish are the rule usually around 5-6 pounds and limits are the rule.
Crappie --- They have finally turned on. They are only about 5 months late from their regular bite. 14-16 inch fish near the brush in 8 feet of water. Now is not the time to try and get them ---your arms will get tired of catching them.
White bass --- 3-4 pounders are hammering slabs in 20-30 feet of water. Find a place where there are no other fisherman and start ripping into them.
O.K. O.K. Back to the real thing. The following report will be real, but based on 2nd hand knowledge from my customers in the store the last few days.
Walleye -- Minnows 20-30 feet deep near the channel will produce some. Do not expect limits, trolling over brush in 14-18 feet of water is also still producing fish. I have heard of 3-4 limits taken this way the last 3 days.
Bass --Smallies in 10 feet of water in the flats around the lake. Minnows and/crawlers are working the best. Fishing pressure has been light --not much else to report on the bass.
Catfish -- Limits in 5 feet of water using Sonny's sticky stink bait. Thats about all I can say about them. If I told you where my friend Johnny Latham would kill me.
White Bass -- sounds like white slabs are the ticket and 30 foot of water is where they are. I here that many smaller ones are being caught, but if you stay at it, the bigger ones will appear.
LOGAN OPEN this WEEKEND!!!!!!! The biggest bass tourney in New Mexico.

Sept.4th,2009

Peter Sr. and Peter Jr. from Colorado with Walleye caught 8/28/09.
Water temp = 76 degrees, main lake clear with stained river arms.
The fishing is remaining pretty good for all species of fish. My last guiding trip put 6 keeper Walleye in the boat along with 3-4 that were short. All fish were caught trolling in 12-20 feet over thick brush.
Walleye ----Limits are hard to come by, but 4-5 hours of fishing should put quite a few in the live well. Minnows on the bottom in 20 feet of water near the channel edges or try trolling over brush with Wally Divers and Reef Runners.
White Bass ----Slabbing in 30 foot of water around Horseshoe will produce large quantities of fish. Find the schools and you are in for some fun. Use white colored slabs for best results.
Catfish----Sonny's stink bait will produce around 10-15 cats in 5 hours of fishing in 4-10 feet of water near brush.
Small mouth---Work the rocky points with shallow running cranks or spinner baits and you should come up with quite a few. Go to drop shotting a little deeper as the day goes on.
Large mouth --- Spinner baits early in 2-4 feet of water near the tulle's. Move out to 10-14 feet of water on the flats and find some brush / grass and work it slow with some jigs.
Have a safe holiday weekend!!!!!!

August 26th,2009

Bob and son from Texas with a couple of 4 pound Channel cats along with 3 Walleye taken 8/19/09.
Water temp = 75 degrees, main lake clear with the river arms stained.
The fishing at Ute Lake continues to be pretty good, but there are some days that are quite slow. I suggest hitting the water at sunrise for the most consistent bite.
Walleye---the fish are starting to hit slabs fished in 20-30 feet of water. Trolling will still catch a couple, but white colored slabs are producing more fish lately.
White bass ---- Many fish are being caught slabbing 25 feet of water early in the morning near Roger's park and up around Horseshoe Bend in 30 feet of water. Some days limits are the rule and other days a half dozen is a good day.
Catfish ---Many cats are being caught on Sonny's sticky bait in 6-10 feet of water. Near limits are the rule lately, but again some days 3-4 are a good catch.
Small & Large mouth bass -- Fish shallow early and deeper later is about all I can say. Senkos and tubes are producing the best.
The Eagles club is hosting a White bass tourney this Saturday. Sign up here or at the Eagles Friday night at 6:00 p.m. Cost is $30 per 2 man team. Hours are from 6a.m. - 3p.m..

August 13th, 2009

Dave and Steve from Texas with Walleye taken 8/8/09.
Water temp = 76 degrees in main lake, 65 degrees up the river arms. Main lake is lightly stained --- river arms heavily stained.
Both the Canadian and Ute Creek drainage's are running water into the lake at a good pace. Went Cat fishing yesterday up the Ute and there was close to a 20 MPH current at the bridge. The lake is about 4 feet from full.
Walleye ---- Still on a good bite. Use minnows/crawlers in 30 feet of water near the channel drop offs or troll 15-20 feet of water over heavy brush.
White bass -- slab in 30 feet of water or use minnows in 30-40 feet. Top water cranks when they are boiling. Excellent to good fishing.
Small mouth and Large mouth bass --- top water cranks early in the morning and then work 20 foot deep points with plastics or live bait. The bite is still good.
Catfish -- Good to excellent fishing using Sonny's Sticky bait in 4-6 feet of water near or in the brush.
Overall, the fishing pressure the last week or two has been very light, but the fishing is still pretty good if you can get out.
The local Eagles Lodge #3526 is hosting their 1st Annual White Bass Open on August 29th. Entry fee = $30.00 per two person team. Contact the Tackle Box or Jeff Bailey (575-799-1443) from the Eagles for more info.

August 4th,2009

Dalton and Quintin Ellis from Texas with some quality Walleye taken 8/1/09.

Mark Cambell with some large Whites caught slabbing in 30 feet of water on 7/31/09.
Water temp = 78 degrees, main lake clear / upper ends quite murky.
The fishing is remaining pretty good for all species except for the Crappie. My trip on 8/1/09 yielded some nice Wallys all caught in 14-18 feet of water trolling Reef Runners and Wally divers ---still over heavy brush. I just can't stop fishing the brush ---it continues to be the most productive for me. I have seen some 4-5 pounders caught in deeper water near the channel, but not nearly the quantity.
Whites are being caught in good numbers up the Ute Creek arm in the coves. Try the Rogers Park area with top water cranks when the boils start and get ready for some action. Slabbing is also starting to pick up Whites straight west of the marina in 30 feet of water near the cliffs.
Channel cats continue to be caught up both arms in 6-20 feet of water using stink baits. Fish near some brush and move around until you find them. With the recent run-off coming in, it is making them feed.
Smallmouth being caught in good numbers --bigger ones in 20 feet of water and smaller ones in 10-15 feet. Use anything from crank baits to live bait to hammer some. Top water baits early working well on Large mouth -- allot of 2 pounders being whacked.

July 29th, 2009

Bob with his kids Austin and Haley from Roswell, N.M.
with limits of Walleye taken 7/27/09.
Water temp = 78 degrees
The fishing remains pretty good for all species, and can be considered excellent on any given day. I had only one trip this past week, and it was all we could do to not catch Walleye. After our limits of Walleye, we went looking for Whites, but came up with only more Walleye ----some days you can do no wrong.
Walleye -- Trolling deep running lures anywhere from 12-20 feet of water. In my opinion the Walleye are on an excellent bite.
Whites --Could not catch any, but they are around. They may be suspended in a little deeper water than I am currently fishing. Coves may be another good place to find them feeding on shad that they have cornered.
Channel cats -- Still being caught in pretty good numbers ---try 6-15 feet near brush using Sonny's stickey bait. Chicken liver is also producing.
Smallies & Largemouth -- Early morning top water, then move a bit deeper using Carolina rigged plastics and drop shotting near submerged brush.

Some nice Channel cats caught 7/22/09 by Johnny Lathem on Sonny's Sticky Stink bait.

Patrick and son James Ansel from Dumas, Texas with some nice Walleye caught on 7/19/09.
Water temp 78 degrees
The lake has come up about 6 inches this past week due to some badly needed rain. The main lake is clear with the river arms a bit stained. The fishing is holding it's own with some excellent action at any given time.
Walleye ---- Continues to be a good bite. They are moving around the lake from day to day, but once you find them they are hungry. I'm still trolling, but using a little deeper diver. Most fish I'm catching are 15-20 feet deep , but still over brush and submerged trees. I have heard of limits being taken on bottom bouncers rigged with crawlers in 20-25 feet of water near structure.
White bass --- Still catching some while trolling, but many are small. They seem to be scattered through out the lake.
Channel Catfish --- Many nice fish being caught in 6-15 feet of water. Use Sonny's sticky bait to hammer them. Fish up around Romero cove and have some fun.
Small mouth bass---- Are all over the lake. Spinners, crank baits and live bait all work well. They seem to bite anywhere and anytime.
Large mouth bass---- A great top water bite early near the cat tails in the numerous coves. Work spinner baits as the day goes on in a bit deeper water.
Crappie --- Still catching a few trolling, but I would use minnows up the Canadian arm in 10-15 feet of water near structure if I was targeting that species.

Don and Leo from Texas with fish caught 7/15/09 trolling Reef Runners.
Leo and Don on day two of fishing (7/16/09) with their limit of Walleye taken on Reef Runners.

Mason Scroggins from Hereford with a 4 pound channel cat caught on 7/19/09. It won the "trash" fish pot at the Hereford tourney held here last Sunday.

Peter Patrone from Colorado with a good mess of Walleye taken 7/11/09.
7-16-09 Water Temp. = 77 degrees main lake clear and river arms slightly stained ---water level stable ---approx 4-5 feet from being full.
Three guiding trips this week have posted limits or near limits of Walleye. White bass are also hitting once in a while along with your Smallies. It has been a scorcher around here the last 2 weeks, but I don't think it has affected the fishing at all. Weekends have been really busy with the water players, but I also don't think affects the bite, if anything it brings on the bite better. I suggest hitting the water early and getting off it around 1:00 PM.
Walleye --- a great bite going on if you know where and what to use. I have been trolling Reef Runners (size 600) in 14-18 feet of water. They are moving a bit deeper with the warmer water temps. Walleye can also be caught in 18-25 feet of water using live bait near the main channel.
Large mouth -- Fish top water early and move a bit deeper with plastics as the day goes on. Not many big fish being caught, but allot of 14-15 inches are wanting some supper.
Small mouth -- Continues to be a good fishery -- fish points off of the main lake in 10-20 feet of water for the bigger fish. Live bait is hard to beat if you want to catch some of these feisty fighting fish.
Crappie -- We caught one today trolling, but I have heard of quite a few being caught up the Canadian in 6-10 feet of water near structure. Use minnows.
Catfish continue to be a good bite. Use Sonny's stink bait in 10-15 feet of water near trees. They are moving a bit deeper with the warmer temps.
White bass -- We are catching less of them the last few days, but the size has been improving. I have been seeing bait fish boil the last week or so. Using shallow running cranks will be productive when you are in a boil.

Mr. Duncan from Texas with a nice Walleye taken 7/5/09.

Mark Grant from Texas with a couple 20 inch Walleye and a pair of 18 inchers taken 7-7-09 while trolling.

Chris and Shelly Hornton from Dallas, Tx. with a mess of large White bass taken 7-6-09

Troy with his mom Darlene from Texas with their catch on 7/9/09.

Water temp = 76 degrees --main lake clear -- river arms slightly stained.
As you can see from the pictures, fishing is remaining pretty good. Of the three trips taken this week, we have caught at least 20-30 fish every time, however, most of them are 6 inch White bass. Every keeper fish has been earned with being patient and persistent. All trips this week ranged from 4-5 hours in length.
Walleye ---Still trolling Wally Divers, Bombers, Reef Runners and Frenzies in 10-16 feet of water over mesquite. The quantity of fish is less, but the quality is better. White colored lures are my preference right now. You can also catch walleye in 15-25 feet of water on live bait near the channel edges.
White bass --some days you catch a bunch of real nice ones, but every day you can catch a bunch of small ones. Troll near the flats in 10-12 feet of water.
Small mouth bass -- Still on a great bite, but most are 13-14 inches long. Live bait or casting lures about anywhere will catch-em.
Large mouth bass -- Some 5-6 pounders caught last 4th of July -- all on worms and a bobber from shore. Most are 14 inches long caught up into the coves on top water early.
Catfish --Some days are limits and some days are slow ----thats why they call it fishing and not catching.
Crappie -- a few being caught 30 feet deep on minnows.

Susan Latham, from Logan with a mornings catch of channel catfish on 7/1/09. The cats were caught on Sonny's sticky bait that I stock here at the Tackle Box.
Water Temp = 76 degrees - main lake is clear and the river arms are stained.
Yesterday was the first day in a week that I was able to get out and fish ---my boat was in the repair shop needing some attention. I fished for 4 hours on water that looked like glass (not good for fishing shallow Walleye) but did manage 2 Wallys and about 15 Whites and a couple of nice Smallies. All fish were caught trolling white Bombers in 7-12 feet of water.
Walleye ---still a good bite going on. Troll mesquite flats if there is a breeze and if no breeze I would fish the edges of the main channel with crawlers or minnows on the bottom in 15-25 feet of water.
Catfish ---Limits are being taken on Sonny's sticky bait fishing up the coves in 3-6 feet of water.
Crappie -- a few being caught around the marina at night with minnows.
White bass -- Many smaller ones being caught anywhere in the lake, but the larger ones are a hit or a miss. Watch for the boils --- they seem to boil more in the late afternoon --- in front of the dam can be very productive.
Small mouth bass -- can be caught any where in the lake on just about anything. Many 10-12 inch fish with an occasional 16 incher.
Large mouth bass--- Senkos or spinner baits continue to catch them. Not many large fish being caught, but you should be able to catch 14 inchers in the numerous coves in 2-6 feet of water.
Enjoy the holiday weekend --- Parade Saturday morning, fire works Saturday evening.

Brian Kirk from Texas with 3 Wallies and a bunch of Whites taken 6-20-09 ---the Whites were snapping!!!!!

Rustin and Johnny Moore with fish taken 6/17/09 -----they had a blast

Lee Bice and Johnny from Texas with 4 real nice Walleye taken 6/17/09.

Will and dad Peter Patrone from Colorado with 5 good Walleye and a nice Channel cat caught on 6/16/09. We had to earn everyone of these fish on a windless day.

June 23rd, 2009
Water temp = 72 degrees
The fishing has been pretty good to excellent and I bet it will remain that way for the next 3-4 weeks. The only problem I see coming up is the hot temperatures that they are predicting for the next week. It won't affect the fishing, but you will swelter like a fish in a frying pan come about 2 P.M. You will want to hit the water early and get your fish by mid-day.
Walleye---- continue to be on an excellent bite ---some days are limits and some days are not, but all days are producing fish. More limits are coming on the breezy days (10-15 MPH). The fish are also moving around, so you may have to try different spots to locate them. I'm still trolling crank baits in 7-12 feet of water over thick mesquite brush. Walleye are also being taken on minnows and crawlers in 15-25 feet of water near the edges of the main channel.
Crappie----a few being caught, but you will have to work for them. Minnows near brush in 6-10 feet of water up either river arm is your best bet.
White bass----It is a hit or miss on these guys. Many small ones being caught daily, but the large ones are moving around. When you find them, you can whack and stack em. Fishing off of the Marina at night with lights is producing the most consistent bite. Use minnows 1-2 feet off of the bottom in 30-40 feet of water underneath your light.
Catfish ---Fish are starting to move a little deeper (6-15 ft). Use stink baits, minnows or crawlers to entice them. Do not expect limits, but you should be able to catch supper.
Small mouth---- are being caught about anywhere. The larger ones are hitting a bit better in the late afternoon. Minnows and crawlers in 5-15 feet of water will catch them. Throwing Senkos whacky rigged and jigs tipped with Gulp minnows will also work good.
Large mouth---Fish the reeds early for a top bite and work a bit deeper as the day goes on. Chatter baits and spinner baits are doing well.

June 14th, 2009

Bubba Norris and wife Penny with our limit of 15 Walleye taken 6/13/09. We were trolling over thick mesquite brush in 10-15 feet of water.
Bill and Bonnie Bryant from Clovis with some nice Wallys taken 6/12/09 again trolling in the brush. This day there was not a breath of air blowing and I believe it affected the quantity of our fish taken.

Water Temp = 70 degrees

We finally had a weekend that was not blowing us around and the fishing was sizzling hot. Many, many people out this weekend and everybody (most) had a good time. I want to remind everybody that the speed limit from Logan to Ute lake is 45 MPH. This area is heavily patrolled on the weekends and it is not worth a ticket. I have to admit though, it gives us some entertainment because our shop is where many offenders pull off of the road and sometimes they get to perform the sobriety tests for the officers. More than once have we seen people hand-cuffed and given a ride the pokey. Back to the fishing report.

Walleye -- continues to be a fantastic fishery. Limits are usually the rule and can be taken in 4-5 hours. Troll Wally Divers and size 200 Reef Runners in water 7-18 feet deep over the brush. Bottom bouncing crawlers and minnows will also produce fish near the drop offs in 15-25 feet of water.

Bass fishing (Smallies and Large) -- Good fishing using Senkos rigged "Whacky" in 3-10 feet of water. Top water is also working early and late in the day. I have not seen anything bigger than 2 pounds lately, but I have seen many fish 14-16 inches long.

White Bass -- I have been catching a few, but have not really been stacking them up. More small ones being caught than the bigger ones.

Crappie -- A few being caught, but not in any consistent numbers. Not sure where they are.

Catfish -- Near limits being caught using stink baits near reeds in 4-6 feet of water. Go back into the numerous coves and soak some stink.

Guy and Bonnie Mitchell from Logan with fish caught 6/2/09 in only 2 hours of fishing.
Cooper and Dalton from Texas with a nice stringer of Walleye caught on 6/3/09 ----4 hours of fishing.

GREAT FISHING

Water temp = 68 degrees

The main lake is clear and the river arms are lightly stained. I have been a fishing fool the last few days, and all I can say is that the Walleye are snapping. Yesterday my clients boated at least 20 Walleye --- only 8 keepers --- but it is great to see the 10 inchers in the lake. They look healthy and are hungry!!!!! We also boated many Whites and a few Smallies while we were out --- only 4 hours. We trolled 100% of the time using Frenzies, Reef Runners and Wally Divers in 8-15 feet of water covered with mesquite on the bottom and up to 5 feet from the surface.

Crappie -- They are starting to show up in the Canadian arm, but limits are still rare -- expect 8-10 fish in a day of fishing. Minnows are the main bait that I am selling for them. Fish in 6-10 feet of water near or in the brush. Many of the Crappie being caught are males and their bottom side of their tails are reddish in color ---telling me that the females will soon be coming in when the beds have been made.

Walleye ---What can I say ---the most consistent bite for any species right now and it is a good one!!! Trolling has worked excellent for me, but bottom bouncing crawlers and minnows near structure is also producing limits.

Catfish --- Stink baits in 4-6 feet of water is catching close to limits of Mr. Whiskers. My fishing buddie catches 2 pounders one day and then 4 pounders the next day. They seem to move around in age classes.

White bass -- Not really fishing for them, but catching allot of them while trolling. Use light colored crank baits.

Small mouth -- Continue to hit about anything anywhere. Many 10-12 inchers, but an occasional 16-18 incher can be caught.

Large mouth -- Quite a few 2 pounders being caught up the river arms and in the back of the numerous coves. Keep your presentations close to reeds and brush and retrieve them slow.

Walleye are SNAPPING

Water Temp = 67 degrees

The Holiday weekend has been a good one for fishing and camping. Thousands of people spent their holiday weekend here at Ute Lake, all having a great time fishing, camping and enjoying their water sports. With that said, the fishing is heating up the last 3-4 days.

Walleye --- Limits can be expected trolling Wally Divers and Reef Runners in 10-20 feet of water near or in the brush. I like my lures running just deep enough to hit the top of the brush. Minnows worked along the channel in 15-20 feet of water is also producing fish.

White Bass -- I'm starting to catch more of them while trolling for the Walleye. With limits of Walleye, you can also catch 10-15 Whites while trolling.

Small mouth --- They continue there feeding. Casting lures, using minnows or crawlers in about any location of the lake will produce fish.

Large mouth --- Casting Senkos near the reeds early in the morning is catching 2-3 pounders. Top water is also producing fish, but not as many.

Crappie -- still scattered, however, I have seen a few limits taken with minnows up the Canadian near the Adobe house in 5-6 feet of water. Many Whites are also being caught while Crappie fishing.

Catfish -- On a pretty good bite. My buddy is catching 10-15 fish ranging from 2-6 pounds nearly every time he goes out. Stink bait near reeds in 2-6 feet of water is the ticket.

Fishing Report

Water temp = 65 degrees

Cold fronts continue to hamper the fishery a bit, but fish can still be taken. With Memorial weekend coming up, it looks like another mild front is coming in.

Walleye -- Catching fish in the trees and brush by trolling Reef Runners and Walleye Divers over the top of them in 10-15 feet of water. Carolina rigged crawlers and minnows are also producing Walleye in 15-20 feet of water near major structure.

Crappie --Catching a few while trolling for the Walleye, but they have not yet come into the shallows for a major spawn. You can catch a few in the trees with minnows or Road Runners, but very few limits have been taken by the Crappie fishermen.

White Bass -- We are catching a few here and there, but they have not yet schooled up into their summer pattern.

Catfish -- They too have moved into a little deeper water ( 6-15 feet) because I believe of the weather patterns. Use stink baits and Water Dogs to catch a few.

Small Mouth bass----- can be taken on about anything anywhere.

Large Mouth bass ---- are still in the shallows near or in the reeds and brush.

Have a safe Holiday weekend and we hope to see you in the store.

Fishing Report

Water temp = 65 degrees

We continue to have cold fronts move in about once a week which is affecting the fishing a little bit. It seems that the fishing is slow for the next two days after a cold front, then it starts picking up on the 3rd day. The river arms are stained with the main lake clear. The Mesquite has started to leaf out and that's when the locals say that the Crappie are going to turn on. I was on the water 5 of the last six days. On Monday (5/11/09) we fished in insulated coveralls and Tuesday you could not peel off enough cloths because of the heat. Fish were caught on all days, but it was much better later in the week.

Walleye --- I have started to troll Reef Runners and Wally Divers with pretty good success in 15-20 feet of water over brush that is submerged. The average life spam of a Reef Runner is maybe an hour, but that is where I have had the most luck. Walleye are also being caught near steep structure in 10-15 feet of water using minnows and jigs.

Small mouth remain on a constant bite hitting about anything you throw at them. Minnows are an excellent bait for them. You will catch quite a few shorter fish, but there are some nice ones being boated.

Large mouth are on beds and will soon move out to a little deeper water. I really do not fish for them, but spinner baits and Senkos should do the trick. I am selling allot of watermelon red colors from the store if that is any indication for the color bass fisherman are using.

White bass are still a hit or a miss. You will usually catch a few trolling, but there are times when you can hammer a bunch of them. They are starting to school up more which is a good sign.

Crappie are being caught up the Ute more than the Canadian right now. We have caught several trolling while fishing for Walleye in the Ute. They should turn on big time any day now.

Cat fishing remains good using stink baits in 2-4 foot of water up either river arm. A couple of my friends caught 16 nice cats on 5/13/09. They did have to fish 8 hours to get em.

FISH ON------Rob
