4/19/10

Mark & Randy Gardner with limits of Walleye taken 4/16/10 using minnows in 10-20 feet of water.
Water temp = 54 degrees, main lake clear, river arms stained.
Fishing remains pretty good considering the cold fronts last week along with extremely high barometric pressures this past weekend. I had two guiding trips the last few days and they both produced good qtys of Walleye and Smallies. Yesterday I took out Tyler Polumbus along with his dad Tad and brother in-law Jeff Wennberg all from the Denver Co. area. Tyler is a offensive guard for the Denver BRONCOS. Go Broncos!!!!!!!
Walleye---Excellent ---They continue to bite minnows in 10-20 feet of water near the main lake channel. Many bass fisherman are also catching them in shallow water during their pursuit of the bucket mouth.
White bass--Good---Trolling around the Ranch House using Reef Runners and Berkley Frenzies continue to produce fish.
Catfish---Good---3-5 pounders being caught up the Ute in 3-5 foot of water using Sonny's stickey bait. Don't expect limits, but you should be able to catch enough for supper.
Smallmouth bass ---Good to Excellent--Personally, we have been catching 6-8 smallies while fishing for Walleye using minnows. They are in 5-10 feet of water on the flats off of the main channel..
Largemouth bass---Good---I have heard of quite a few being caught in the shallows of the coves using jerk baits and spinner baits. They are not to far from preparing their beds.
Crappie---Poor---Some are being caught off of the Marina, but not in any numbers. I have yet to see a nice stringer come out of the lake. Water temp needs to rise 5-10 degrees before they bust loose.

Jeremy Lewis from Fort Meyer, Fl. with his limit of Walleye and a couple Smallies taken 4/10/10

Bruce Hubbord from Logan, N.M. with a monster 6.25 pound Smallie taken 4/10/10 about mid morning on a crawdad colored crankbait. A bigger smallie followed this fish to the boat!!! The fish was released.

A young fisherman with his first ever Walleye taken off of the dam on minnows -4/10/10

Water Temp = 56 degrees -Main lake clear ---river arms stained.
I would say that the fishing has busted loose and will only get better. I had 4 guiding trips the last four days all netting limits of Walleye and quite a few Smallmouth. We had a beautiful weekend weather wise and a whole bunch of people took advantage of it.
Walleye-Excellent-- fish about 20 feet deep on structure near the main lake channel. Minnows and crawlers are the big producers.
Smallmouth-Excellent--fish the 10 foot flats off of the main lake. Minnows and crawlers will catch them along with throwing cranks.
Largemouth-Good--throw spinner baits in the coves and brush. The thicker the brush--the better.
Crappie --Poor--Some are being caught --- but it should really get going when the water temp hits 60 degrees.
Catfish -- Good -- Quite a few being caught in 5-8 feet of water.. The upper Ute is producing better than the Canadian right now. Use Sonny's stink bait for the best results.
Whitebass--Good---troll up the Canadian around the Ranch house for the best results. Pull Reef Runners and Berkley Frenzies in lighter colors for the best results.

April 1st, 2010

Bruce Hubbord from Logan, N.M. with a nice 23 1/2" Walleye that went 4 1/2 ponds caught 4/1/10. He caught and released 22 more Walleye and also released this one after the picture.
Marylyn and Steve from Riodoso, N.M. on a repeat trip 3/31/10 pictured with 10 of the 18 fish taken trolling in very windy conditions.

Craig and son William from Carlsbad, N.M. with a good catch of Whites, Catfish and a couple Walleye taken 3/26/10.

Water Temp = 47 degrees, main lake clear, river arms stained.

Fishing is really starting to heat up --- if only the wind would die down a bit. The fish don't mind the breeze, but it sure takes some of the fun out of an enjoyable past time. Our water temp. just cannot seem to get to 50 degrees ---its just a matter of a week or so. Once the temp gets to the mid 50's, the fishing is going to bust loose.

Walleye -- good --fish the rocky points in 5-20 feet of water with crank baits or minnows. Trolling will produce some, put not nearly as many.
White bass -- excellent --Troll light colored lures in 20 feet of water up the Canadian to hammer them. Expect 10-40 per trip.
Crappie --slow-- a few being caught, but they are not yet on fire. Need the water temp close to 58-60 degrees before they really go on a bite.
Catfish -- slow to O.K.---a few being caught, but it seems that the fronts have slowed them down a bit.
Small and Large mouth bass--slow to good--from last weekend's Sun Country bass tourney all I can say is that it was a tough bite along with tough weather. However, the last day or two the Smallmouth are waking up to feed on the 10-15 foot flats near the main lake channel. Minnows and crawlers have been the ticket. Fish the upper Ute arm for some Large mouth throwing crankbaits in the stained water near stucture.
