3/25/10

Steve and Marylyn from Riodoso N.M. with some of their catch on 3/23/10. 3 Walleye, 1 Crappie and a bunch of White bass.
William Hutchinson from Carlsbad N.M., with 2 of their 12 Channel cats caught 3/24/10 using Sonny's Sticky bait. (notice --you can see snow falling) These cats went 5 pounds each.

Water temp = 47 degrees in the main lake and up around 50 degrees in the river arms. Main lake is clear and river arms stained. As the pictures dictate, my guiding trips the last week or two are producing quite a few fish. If we can get some stable weather and get the lake temp. up to the mid 50's - the fishing is going to get "RED HOT"
Walleye (Fair) --Trolling cranks in 20 feet of water is starting to pick up some fish. We are catching a few more on every trip. They are moving up into the river arms. Some fish are also being caught on suspending jerk baits up the Ute arm. Soaking minnows in 20 feet of water will also produce.
Catfish (Good)--Use Sonny's Sticky bait in 5-8 feet of water up either river arm.
White bass (Good to Excellent) -- some days you catch 10, some days you catch 40. Troll white colored cranks in 10-20 feet of water has been producing for me.
Crappie (Slow)--We have been catching a couple here and there, but not in any numbers. I do believe though, that if you just targeted the Crappie for a day of fishing, you just might be able to catch a bunch of them. I would fish minnows up either arm near brush in 5-10 feet of water.
Large and Small mouth bass (Slow - Fair) --There has been some caught, but not in any large numbers. Sun Country has a large tourney here this coming weekend so we will see how they do. Fishing pressure has been light for the bass, so this tourney will be a good "check" to see how the bass fishery is doing.

03/14/10

Andy and Renee from Colorado Springs with fish caught on 3/13/10. The biggest fish was the Crappie --- a real "pig". All fish were caught trolling up the Canadian.

Water Temp = 45 degrees main lake(clear) with the river arms(stained) warming into the low 50's.

My first guiding trip of the year had a rather slow start the first hour netting only one Walleye, but then we found the fish up the Canadian in a little warmer water. Trolling Berkley Frenzies "Pearl color" and size 600 Reef Runners in "wonder bread color" were the ticket to catching a batch of fish. We were in 20 feet of water trolling over brush.
Walleye---improving every day, but should explode in the near future. Fish 20-25 feet of water with minnows. They should be moving shallower any day.
Smallies and Large mouth--- are being caught throwing grubs and jerk baits near cover in 5-15 feet of water.
Crappie---just starting to catch a few. Minnows in 5-10 feet of water and trolling over brush will catch some. If we don't get any major cold fronts come in, limits should be the rule in the next few weeks.
Channel cats----Continue to hammer Sonny's sticky bait up either river arm in 5-8 feet of water. Expect 3-5 pounders on the stringer.
White bass ---staging up both river arms, I think the Canadian is better right now. Cast jerk baits near brush and the shore line or troll over brush with light colored lures.
I have a couple more guiding trips next week --I will update report again next Friday to give you the latest info ---
Until then,
