Kay McAdams from Stratford, Tx. with a couple nice Whites and a Walleye caught 7/25/10

Bubba and Penny Norris from Hobbs, N.M. with their catch taken on 7/22/10.
Water temp = 78-80 degrees, main lake clear, river arms lightly stained.
The last few weeks have not only been HOT, but also rather muggy because of higher humidity, which in turn causes lighter fishing pressure and heavy recreational use. If you do go fishing I suggest getting up early and fish till early afternoon. I am not seeing an early morning bite, but at least its comfortable. On my recent trips I have noticed the best bite to be from noon to 2:00 P.M., but by then you are just about cooked and ready to get off of the water.
Walleye--Fair--The bite has slowed, but the fish are out there. Slab in 30-50 feet of water is one option and trolling over brush in 10-20 feet of water is still my preferred method. We are still catching quite a few short fish with an occasional keeper. Small and Large mouth bass along with White bass and Walleye can be caught this way.
White bass--Fair to Good--They are starting to school up a bit more in 30-50 feet of water. Slabbing is productive if you can find them. Watch for the birds feeding on the water and it is a good bet the Whites are below them feeding on shad.
Catfish--Fair--Stinks baits in 4-8 feet of water will get some, but it has slowed down over the last week or two.
Crappie--Sh&*%ty
Small and Large mouth bass --Fair--We have been catching a few here and there, but we are not trying to get them. I would think if you target them for a day of fishing, you would do well fishing the main points and structure and also the grass beds on the lake.

July 15th, 2010

Mark & Tami Garmin from Texas with some excellent Walleye caught on 7/10/10. The biggest one came in at 23 inches and close to 4 pounds. We were trolling flicker shads made by Berkley.
I.J. and wife Audray from Portales, N.M. with fish caught on 7/11/10. We caught numerous Walleye, but the majority were short fish.

John and Pete from the east coast with "Eyes' taken on 7/13/10. It was one of the toughest days of fishing in a year or so. We did manage a 22 incher though.

Water temp = 80 degrees, main lake clear, river arms slightly stained.
The water temp has shot up to 80 degrees the last few days. Last weekend the temp was 75 degrees. As you can see, the catches on my trips started to fall as the water temp rose. I believe that the fish are moving a bit deeper into a bit cooler water. My next trip is Friday and I will be armed with a variety of deeper running lures to get down to 30 feet or more to see if my hunch is correct.
Walleye---Good---Still catching them trolling over brush, but not in the numbers or size we want. Try 20-30 feet of water for the bigger fish ---bottom bouncing crawlers or deep divers in the channel.
White bass---poor to fair--If you are at the right place at the right time, you can hammer them, but over all it is a tough bite compared to the past years for this time of summer.
Crappie--Poor---Where are they?
Channel cats---Good to Excellent---Rogers sticky bait in 4-6 feet of water near brush and tulle's in the main part of the lake is producing the best. The dam to where the Ute enters the Canadian is the location.
Small mouth bass--Good---There is an unbelievable early morning top water bite going on over the shallow flats near the deeper water. Throw anything that does not sink and you will catch fish. After about 8:00 am it is over and you will need to fish deeper.
Large mouth bass--Fair--Again a good early morning top water bite in the back of the coves, but as the day goes on you will need to go to deeper structure to entice them.

Arnie and grandson Johnny from Las Cruces with limits of Walleye taken 7/6/10.

Jordan Ward from Clovis, N.M. with a 4.91 pound Large mouth taken 6/30/10.

Ish and Lidia from Roswell N.M. with limits of Walleye taken 7/5/10.

Water temp = 75-76 degrees, main lake clear, river arms stained.
Not allot of fishing pressure the last week, but the fish are on a great bite. The more boats on the water seems to put the fish into a feeding mode. I had 2 trips the last 3 days with excellent results on both of them. Limits of Walleye in less than 3 hours of fishing on both trips!!!! Now is the time to book your trip if you are interested in catching and eating a mess of Walleye. We have been catching a few fish in the 20-22 inch range along with 16-19 inchers filling out the limits.
Walleye--Excellent--Trolling cranks over brush in 10-20 feet of water.
Small mouth--Good to Excellent--We are catching quite a few while going after the Walleye. If you are just fishing for bass, I would think you could catch a bunch of them.
Large mouth--Good--Some nice ones being caught --fish shallow points near deeper water using red crawdad baits.
White bass--Poor--We have not caught one in the last week.
Crappie--Poor--I don't know what to tell you on these guys.
Catfish--Good to Excellent--Fish in 4-8 feet of water near or in the brush. Sonny's Sticky bait continues to get them along with chicken liver.
